Rally Behind the USA Under 23 Lighweight Men's Pair
For 6 years, Kyle James and Jack Gleim have been rowing out of the Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake. The duo first learned to row with the Mercer Jr’s and then continued their rowing careers at the University of Wisconsin and Marietta College. This year, at the USRowing World Championship Trials, Kyle and Jack partnered up to win the under 23 lightweight men’s pair event on the same course they call home. Now Kyle and Jack have their sights set on competing at the Under 23 World Championships that will take place August 21-28 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
The Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake is a designated U.S. Olympic Training Site, which means that Jack and Kyle have been tip-toeing around U.S. National Team athletes on a daily basis ever since they took their first strokes. “When I began rowing, I was mostly in awe and also terrified around the national team athletes at the boathouse,” said Gleim, “but what impressed me the most was imagining the weight that these athletes must carry representing America internationally. I now understand that honor.”
Kyle James feels that privilege as well, “It’s been my dream since I started rowing to go to worlds and race for the U.S.” said James, “Having my family and friends here to cheer me on has made this a life changing experience that I will never forget.”
Kyle and Jack now need your support to help fund the costs associated with competing at a World Championship. The goal is to fundraise $12,000 that will cover accommodations, flights, food, equipment rental, and coach support that will be needed to be successful at the World Championships. This is a self-funded trip. Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated!
“Thank you to everyone who continues to show their support. You make this all possible!"
